So, I finally gave in and listened to the Donald Trump hot mic recording.

I can kind of understand why Trump supporters are trying to dismiss it. In their perspective, its a red herring like bringing up Monica Lewinsky to attack Hillary Clinton.

BUT how can you rationalize it as “locker room talk”? Like, are you saying that is ok? Is it ok that we accept that behavior behind closed doors? The terms “political correctness” and “objectifying women” are way overused and I think we’ve just become numb to what they mean.

We spend so much time making sure our public speech is politically correct, and then when we’re in the safety of a like-minded community–bros in the locker room–we can say whatever sexist, and quite often, racist things we want.

Yes the contrast between public conversation and private conversation is needed to have psychological security; we need have a place that we can feel emotionally secure (We’d prefer to use other words to describe it, but yes, men need security, emotional security), but this is the kind of behavior we accept behind closed doors?

This kind of “locker room” talk just allows these male superiority ideals to remain unchallenged. What this duality does is says “Ya, people will get pissed if I make a sexist remark in public, but at the end of the day, chicks like a man who will take control.” You create an environment where sexual harassment and aggressiveness lurks in the shadows.

I don’t care about the politics right now on this, this is a cultural topic. I’m disappointed in how people are responding to this and dismissing it.

It is this kind of conflicting messages that allows sexual harassment and rapes to persist. Again, I understand why this kind of talk happens, but that doesn’t make it right.
